Lincoln's first diaper bank is coming!  The Junior League of Lincoln and Center for People in Need have partnered to create the Junior League of Lincoln Diaper Bank. With the formation of this diaper bank, the Center and JLL hope to make an impact on the thousands of Lancaster County residents suffering diaper need, which is the insufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry, and healthy.

"We estimate more than 6,000 children in Lancaster County suffer diaper need," said Chris Funk, the Center's executive director. "We are very happy to be working with the Junior League of Lincoln in ending this unnecessary hardship for the children and families in our community."

The JLL Diaper Bank, in partnership with the Center, will collect, store, and distribute free diapers to member agencies throughout Lincoln, who will then distribute those diapers to families in need. Diapers will be collected through local diaper drives, in-kind donations, and by direct purchase with donated funds. The JLL Diaper Bank will begin signing up new member agencies in 2021.

"Diaper need impacts the physical, mental, and economic wellbeing of children and families," said Hannah Norman, president of JLL. "One in three families with young children in the U.S. struggles with diaper need. ... The Junior League of Lincoln has always been dedicated to serving women and children. As we near our 100th year in the community, we are excited to embark on this new collaboration."

Diapers, which can cost about $80 per month per child, can be an insurmountable expense for low-income families. To extend their diaper supply, some families do not change their child's diaper as often as needed or wash and attempt to reuse disposable diapers. This can result in negative health affects for the child, like diaper rash and urinary tract infections. It also takes a toll on the parents with increased stress and depression, which can in turn negatively affect the child's development.

The Junior League of Lincoln is hosting a diaper drive from Sept. 21 to Oct. 23, 2020. To participate, make a monetary donation at cfpin.org or jll.org, or visit the JLL Diaper Bank Amazon Wish List and have your donation shipped directly to JLL.
