Volunteer Service

How to Start Volunteering:

Except for the special events discussed above, if you choose to volunteer with Center for People in Need there is no need to sign up prior to starting. When you are ready to begin just come to our facility, 3901 N 27th St, and check in at our Front Desk through Door 1. Our staff will direct you to someone who will help you get started and complete our volunteer orientation.  The time you spend completing our volunteer orientation will count toward your total hours of volunteering with us.

  • Be sure to always sign in and out using our electronic Volunteer Management System so we can account for your hours.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes.
  • We ask that all volunteers bring with them a government-issued photo ID such a driver’s license each time they come if you have one.
  • Volunteers need to scan their ID into our Volunteer Management System.
  • The system will maintain your information, but you will still need to use your ID to check in each time.
  • The system will automatically do a quick online background check. Once cleared (it only takes a few seconds) you can immediately start volunteering.

For any additional questions, please contact Sue Saxton, (402) 476-4357 or ssaxton@cfpin.org.

Listed below is information about our current volunteer opportunities:

  • Neighborhood FOOD program (every week): We always need help setting out the food on tables for distribution and helping people shop as they go through the line and check out.
    • Tuesday afternoons, anytime between 2:00 - 6:00 pm
    • Friday afternoons, between 1:30 - 4:30 pm.
    • In addition, the Center offers Food Distribution from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.
  • Care Room and Donation Room (daily, ongoing):  Monday through Friday anytime between 8:30 am and 4:45 pm.  This involves inspecting household goods and clothing that we receive in bulk and sorting them for distribution to the people we serve.
  • Volunteers support Center clients during food distribution.Special Events: A few large distribution events for low-income families and individuals occur throughout the year.  These require many volunteers over the course of several days. Our main events are a special three-day Thanksgiving FOOD Distribution in mid-November and a three-day Toyland for Kids event in early December. Volunteer shifts for these events typically last for two hours. Online sign-up will be available a few weeks before any given event, so please watch this site if you are interested in participating.

Group volunteer opportunities are welcomed and can be arranged by contacting Sue Saxton, Volunteer Coordinator, at (402) 476-4357 or ssaxton@cfpin.org.

We would like to thank you for being interested in volunteering at Center for People in Need. We couldn’t do this important work without help from volunteers. Who are willing to give up their time in helping our programs and events.
